The lyrics, "what the world needs now, is love sweet love," keeps singing in my head (yours too now :-)) Anyway, I am thinking back to last weekend. My son and a girlfriend of his were on their way down to Philly Pride. As they were leaving the house, I mentioned to them, please be aware of your surroundings at all times. You won't be in the suburbs anymore, and you just never know. As they left, with the brush off of, she is a mom and just likes to worry, I said, 'I love you', and they were on their way. Fast forward to opening up my fb page which was inundated with the news of the Orlando shootings.....
You can imagine my concern as I had just told my child of the ugliness of the world. So, I did what any other mother would do, and sent him a text letting him know the happenings from the night before and just reiterating everything I had just said with a huge BE CAREFUL!!!!
It is sad to think that we have to teach our children fear. I am not an authority on anything. I don't claim to know how to parent, but I do have beliefs. One of which, is a quote by Maya Angelou which reads, "Hate, It has caused a lot of problems in the world, but has not solved one yet." You may hate a person's belief, you may dislike what they think, say, or do, but not one of us walking the face of the earth was put here to be the judge and jury. I just wish that all of the energy that is put into hating someone, was put into loving them.
As the sign in The Loving Piece reads, One Kind Word Can Make Someone's Day." Why not try it. Smile at someone, say hello to a stranger, look for the positives in people....digging for the negative is so exhausting. I can't save the world, but I can do one thing at a time....as can we all. We all coexist....let's make it
